What happens when solar cars keep racing for 24 hours, day and night, on one of

Belgium’s most iconic circuits? At the iLumen European Solar Challenge, you can

experience it for yourself. At Circuit Zolder, innovation, competition and teamwork

come together in a unique event you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

On 19 and 20 September, student teams, engineers and supporters from diMerent

countries will gather once again for the world’s only 24-hour solar car race. What

visitors experience there goes far beyond a typical race weekend. It is a weekend

filled with technology, strategy, sustainability and unforgettable moments.

A race that literally never stops

From the moment the starting signal is given, Circuit Zolder comes alive. In the pit lane,

teams are constantly working on their strategy, engineers are analysing live data and

drivers are preparing for their next stint on track.

Every decision matters. Teams must continuously decide how to use their available

energy as eAiciently as possible, taking into account the weather, battery levels and the

performance of their car. That makes every lap part of a much bigger strategic challenge.

During the day, the circuit has an energetic atmosphere. Visitors can walk along the pit

lane, follow the action up close and discover how technology and innovation are put into

practice.

But once the sun sets, iESC takes on a completely diAerent character.

The magic of the night

While most sporting events come to a halt after sunset, the iLumen European Solar

Challenge keeps going. The race does not stop for a single second.

The lights stay on in the pit boxes. Teams monitor their systems, adjust their strategies

and keep working tirelessly to get the very best out of their solar car. Out on track, the

cars continue to complete lap after lap through the night.

For visitors, this is often one of the most impressive moments of the weekend. The

combination of silence, focus and solar cars passing by creates an atmosphere that is

hard to compare with any other motorsport event.

More than just speed

Although the solar cars deliver impressive performances, iESC is about much more than

speed alone.

Behind every car is a team that has often spent years working on innovation, eAiciency

and sustainable mobility. Students design, build and optimise their vehicles to make the

diAerence during this 24-hour race.

For many participants, the iLumen European Solar Challenge is the highlight of months

of preparation, testing and collaboration. At Circuit Zolder, all that hard work is finally

put to the test.

As a visitor, you can feel that too. You are not just watching a race. You are seeing the

future of mobility in action.

An international community driven by the same passion

What makes the atmosphere at iESC even more special is its open and international

character. Teams from diAerent countries bring their own knowledge, culture and

approach, while sharing the same passion for technology, innovation and sustainability.

This creates a unique dynamic both on and oA the track. Competition and collaboration

go hand in hand, resulting in a warm and accessible atmosphere for visitors.

Whether you are interested in engineering, sustainable technology, motorsport or simply

looking for a unique day out, there is always something to discover.

The most beautiful moment of the weekend

For many teams and visitors, sunrise is the absolute highlight.

After a long night, the first sunlight appears over Circuit Zolder. The cars keep driving, the

teams regain new energy and the circuit slowly wakes up for another day of racing.

At that moment, the essence of the iLumen European Solar Challenge becomes

perfectly clear: innovation moving forward, powered by the sun.
