2010 – The beginning
The first edition took place on the military airbase in Zutendaal, organized by Rotary Club Genk-Staelen. Four teams from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and France participated in this first solar race.
2012 - Expanding the track
The second edition moved to an urban setting in and around Genk. With teams from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland, international interest in the event continued to grow.
2014 – Official recognition & circuit move
Green Technology Events was established as the official organizer, and iLumen became the title sponsor, giving the event its current name. The race moved to Circuit Zolder, introducing a 6-hour format with seven international teams.
2016 – The first 24-hour race
The event evolved into the first-ever 24-hour solar endurance race. Twelve teams from across Europe and beyond, including Turkey and Colombia, competed at Circuit Zolder in this landmark edition.
2018 – Long-term commitment
A 10-year partnership with Circuit Zolder was signed, securing the venue as the permanent home of the iESC. The event welcomed 22 teams from all over the world, further establishing its global reputation.
2020 – Racing through a pandemic
Despite COVID-19, the race went ahead under strict health measures. While 23 teams had registered, travel restrictions led to a reduced grid of 12 teams, competing in a fully controlled environment.
2021 – Special edition
With the World Solar Challenge in Australia canceled, the iESC held a one-time extra edition to give teams the opportunity to compete. This event gained strong support from the global solar racing community.
2022 – A royal visit
The race returned with 22 teams from around the world. His Majesty King Philippe of Belgium attended and even took a ride in a solar car, bringing national attention to the event’s role in sustainable innovation.
2024 – Stronger than ever
The latest edition, held on September 21-22, featured 23 teams, including many new competitors from across the globe. The event continues to grow, attracting more teams and setting new standards in solar endurance racing.
Looking ahead to 2026
With a solid history of growth and innovation, the iLumen European Solar Challenge continues to push the limits of solar racing. The 2026 edition promises to bring together even more teams, technology, and competition as the event solidifies its place as Europe’s premier solar racing event.
